Are you the main character of your life? Or are you merely a spectator of it?
For the longest time, I felt like I was a side character in my life. Instead of making things happen, I was letting things happen to me. And instead of following my life purpose, I was doing what everyone wanted me to do.
Not only was I unremarkable in the eyes of others, but I was unremarkable in my own life.
I felt mediocre and I had no excitement in life. I honestly felt like it was someone else’s world and I was just living in it.
Until I decided enough was enough. I no longer wanted to be a side character to my own life.
You only have one life, and you should live it as if you were the main character.
In this blog post, I’ll share 7 big ways you can take initiative and become the main character of your life.
What does it mean to be the main character of your life?
Before I dive into the article, I want to clarify what it means to be the main character of your life.
When I watch shows or read books with great protagonists, I notice that they are the ones who make progress in their lives: They make mistakes, learn, and undergo significant character development.
When you review the storyline, you can clearly see how they grew as a person.
Rather than being reactive and passive, great protagonists are proactive in their lives.
To be clear, being the main character of your life doesn’t mean you have to be perfect. Instead, it means that you are willing to try, fail, learn, and evolve as a person.
The main character is focused on their lives and care for the people around them. Instead of wishing to be like someone else, they take action to become the person they want to be.
The goal isn’t to be the main character of everyone’s story: it’s to be the main character of YOUR story.
Now that’s been explained, let’s get into the article!
1. Stop stalking other people’s social media accounts
I put this first because this is so important! I struggled and still struggle with this sometimes and I know many other people do too.
Ever since I was young, I had a habit of lurking on other people’s social media accounts. One account would turn into 10 accounts, and 10 minutes on social media would turn into 3 hours.
I started to live vicariously through other people’s social media feeds and started to compare myself to them. The more I did this, the more I felt like the side character.
Additionally, because of the addicting nature of social media, I wasted a lot of valuable time scrolling instead of taking action for myself.
I knew that if I kept this up, then I would remain the side character of my own life.
If you find yourself getting caught up in other people’s social media feeds, gently remind yourself that you are the main character of your life.
You aren’t missing out on anything if you decide not to look at so-and-so’s Instagram feed.
Rather than viewing other people’s highlight reels, focus on creating your own highlight moments. Once you focus on yourself and fall in love with your life, you won’t have time to care about other people’s lives.
2. Create an Ultimate Life Vision
If you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll never get there.
The main character always has a vision of where they want to go and who they want to be.
It’s their vision that guides their daily action. For example, if your vision is to become a fast runner, you’ll run a mile every day.
If you want to be the main character of your life, you should have a vision too.
Ask yourself, what do you want to do with your life? Who do you want to become? What’s your ultimate goal?
For the best results, you should develop a vision that inspires and motivates you to take action every day.
You can also create a vision board of your ideal life and self for more clarity.
Another thing that helps is to visualize your highest self. Ask yourself, what would your dream self do at any given moment? The more you do this, the more likely you are to create the results that your dream self has.
In my workbook, The Life Clarity Guide, I dive deeper into how you can create an effective vision, expand on the power of visualization and show how you can use it to manifest amazing results in your life.
3. Stop caring about what other people think
This is something I struggled with a lot as a people pleaser. However, I was shrinking myself and my potential in the process.
As the main character of your life, are you really going to let your actions be dictated by another person?
In this scenario, the person you try to please is the main character of your life instead of you.
Of course, this is easier said than done. But at the end of the day, this is your life and you deal with the consequences of it. So-and-so isn’t going to be upset because you decided not to follow your dreams.
When you act more like the main character, you’ll start to care less about what others think. Instead, you’ll focus more on what you want to create out of your life.
4. Truly Understand Yourself and your values
With social media and societal pressures, it’s easy to lose sight of who you are.
Not too long ago, I was working an unfulfilling job and living an unfulfilling life. I was living on autopilot mode, which is the opposite of being the main character.
Because of this, I never took the time to understand who I was, my values, what I wanted, and more.
As a result, I continued to make the same decisions that were keeping me in my unhappy lifestyle.
As the main character of your life, you should take the time to know yourself. What do you like? What are your core values?
If you don’t take the time to figure this out, then someone else will decide your traits and values for you. And if that happens, then you’re just the side character to someone else’s narrative.
When you know who you are and your values, you’ll then be able to live a life that is authentically and truly you. You’ll live in accordance with your beliefs, as the main character should.
I walk you through how you can discover your true values in the Life Clarity Guide.
5. Consume less content and do more
I remember doing a 15-minute beginner’s yoga video and I truly felt like the main character of my life.
That day wasn’t a great day. I remember realizing I spent a whole day consuming content: scrolling through Twitter feeds, refreshing my Instagram feeds, scrolling through Facebook, youtube, and more.
However, the simple act of moving my body and actively doing something gave me my control back. I was choosing to do something for myself. I wasn’t consuming or being consumed by content; instead, I was being proactive in my life.
Reduce the time you spend mindlessly consuming content. Instead, go out and do stuff. Create art, write stories, do yoga, hang out with your family and friends, and more.
If you do consume content, make sure you do it intentionally and mindfully.
6. Do things that give you confidence
There’s no better way to feel like the main character than doing things that give you confidence and makes you feel proud of yourself.
Some ideas are:
- Wear the things that make you feel confident
- Walk with good posture
- Listen to music that makes you feel good
For me, when I dress up in empowering clothes, I always feel like it’s my world. Exercising also makes me feel strong and powerful.
On the other hand, avoid doing things that mentally drain you and take away your energy. Some examples for me are:
- Scrolling through other people’s highly edited social media accounts
- Being around toxic and negative people
- Watching or consuming negative/toxic media
Of course, there are times where you can’t avoid certain things, but when possible, engage in the things that foster positive behaviors and stray away from things that drain your energy.
7. Challenge your limiting beliefs
Do you have any limiting beliefs?
Limiting beliefs sound like:
- I can’t do this
- I’m too old to try
- This is too hard
Our beliefs affect the actions we take and the results we create.
If you think you’re incapable of doing something, then you won’t try as hard. For example, if you don’t think it’s possible to lose weight, then you won’t put in the required effort that is needed.
Your beliefs influence your thoughts, those thoughts influence your behaviors, behaviors influence your actions, and your actions over time determine your results.
That’s why it’s important to understand and acknowledge WHAT your limiting beliefs are AND challenge them so you can create the results you want out of your life.
I show you step-by-step how to identify and challenge your limiting beliefs in the Life Clarity Guide.
